Italy punched their ticket to the Davis Cup semi-finals with a solid 2-1 win over the United States, a milestone they haven't reached since 2014. The deciding match in Malaga saw Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini dominate the court, taking down Jack Sock and Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4 in a high-stakes doubles encounter.
The Italian charge began with an unexpected victory from Lorenzo Sonego, who outclassed America's Frances Tiafoe in the opening rubber. Sonego utilized his massive serve to secure a 6-3, 7-6 (7) win, giving Italy an early 1-0 advantage. His ability to stay calm under pressure in the second set was key. This win was a major upset, especially since Italy entered the tie as underdogs without the injured presence of Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
Sonego set the tone early by taking a 4-2 lead and fending off a break point to take the first set. This was a revenge match of sorts, as he had fallen to Tiafoe in Paris earlier this season. In a nail-biting second set, Sonego saved two set points to push the match into a tiebreak. Although Tiafoe started the tiebreak strong, Sonego ultimately prevailed, converting his third match point to seal the win.
However, the US fought back as Taylor Fritz leveled the tie at 1-1. In a grueling match against Lorenzo Musetti, Fritz survived a first-set tiebreak (7-6 (8)) and took the second set 6-3. His resilience kept the 32-time champions in the game and forced the tie into a final doubles decider.
Despite the USA's record-breaking 32 Davis Cup titles, they have been unable to lift the trophy since 2007. US Captain Mardy Fish didn't hide his frustration after the loss, admitting that failing to advance as both a player and a captain is a bitter pill to swallow and a complete disappointment.
Italy's next challenge will be Canada, who earned their semi-final spot after a thrilling win over Germany. Meanwhile, in the other bracket, Croatia is set to face the 28-time champions, Australia.
