Sumit Nagal’s impressive run at the highest level continued, as the top-ranked Indian singles player fought hard against World No. 7 Holger Rune in the men’s singles second-round match at the Monte Carlo Masters. Sumit Nagal put in an incredible effort to take a set from Rune, a two-time French Open quarter-finalist, in a rain-affected encounter that lasted two days. Nagal lost 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 in 2 hours and 11 minutes, but made headlines with a breakout performance in the renowned Masters 1000 competition.
Building on his earlier success reaching the second round of the Australian Open, Nagal displayed impressive form by securing a double break in the second set against Rune. This portion of the match took place on Thursday after weather delays on Wednesday. In only their second head-to-head meeting, Nagal proved that he can hold his own against top-tier opponents on the clay courts of the major tour.
With an expected appearance in the main draw of the upcoming French Open, Sumit Nagal achieved a historic milestone in Monte Carlo this week. He successfully fought his way into the main draw of the renowned Masters 1000 clay event by overcoming Italian Matteo Arnaldi with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
By beating Arnaldi on Monday, Nagal became the first Indian player ever to secure a win in the main draw of the Monte Carlo Masters. Furthermore, he is the first from his country to win a main draw match at any of the three clay-court Masters 1000 events since their inception in 1990. Currently ranked at a career-high of No. 93, Nagal is only the third Indian to compete in the main draw at Monaco, following in the footsteps of legends Vijay Amritraj in 1977 and Ramesh Krishnan in 1982.
In other action, Ugo Humbert fought his way into the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals by taking down Lorenzo Sonego. With this win, the Frenchman got revenge for a defeat suffered against the Italian in the same tournament last year. The 25-year-old Humbert is now set to face Casper Ruud for a place in the semifinals. Ruud reached the quarterfinals comfortably, dominating Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
On the doubles side, the top-seeded duo of World No. 1 Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden were knocked out in the Round of 16. The Indo-Australian pair fell to Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in straight sets, finishing 3-6, 6-7 (6-8).
