Daniil Medvedev and Naomi Osaka, both top seeds, advance to the next stage

Daniil Medvedev dominated his second-round ATP Masters clash on Wednesday, beating Mackenzie McDonald 6-2, 6-2. The World No. 2 from Russia kept his winning streak alive against the American wildcard, moving easily into the third round after a convincing straight-sets win.
Daniil Medvedev secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mackenzie McDonald in the second-round encounter of the ATP Masters on Wednesday. The World No 2 Russian player continued his winning streak against wildcard McDonald. Medvedev raced into the third round of the ATP event after a comfortable straight-sets win over the American.

Medvedev has been nearly unstoppable, taking 16 of his last 18 matches. This run of form started in June during his victory at the grass-court Mallorca Championships and continued through to Toronto, where he lifted his fourth ATP Masters 1000 trophy just four days ago.

The match was largely decided by Medvedev's serve, which was almost untouchable; he converted 96% of his first-serve points into wins. The Russian stayed sharp throughout the hour-long encounter, fighting for every single point. For Medvedev, winning in Cincinnati is special, as this is where he captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title back in 2019.

Following the win, Daniil Medvedev acknowledged that McDonald played well, pointing out that anyone who makes it to the second round is a quality opponent. He mentioned the challenge of adapting to new conditions when moving from one tournament win to the next, but expressed satisfaction with the ease of this victory.

In the third round, the top seed will go head-to-head with former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov. The two previously faced off in the 2019 US Open semi-finals, a match that Medvedev won in straight sets.

At the Western and Southern Open on Wednesday, Naomi Osaka staged a comeback to defeat American Coco Gauff 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The World No. 2 found herself struggling early on, trailing by a set and a break, but managed to fight her way back to win the opening-round match. This appearance marks Osaka's first WTA Tour event since the French Open. The 17-year-old Gauff proved to be a formidable opponent, taking the first set by using high-bouncing, heavy shots to neutralize Osaka's power, though she couldn't maintain that intensity until the end.
The 17-year-old teenager Gauff gave a tough fight to win the first set. Gauff successfully countered Osaka’s powerful game with heavy and high-bouncing shots. But she failed to continue the momentum and win the game.

After the grueling encounter, Osaka remarked that it felt great to be tested by such a strong competitor in a three-set battle. She added that she is looking forward to facing more high-level fighters in the coming matches.

Following her Australian Open victory in February, Osaka took a hiatus for her mental health, withdrawing from the French Open in May and skipping Wimbledon. She eventually returned to competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where her run ended in the round of 16.
