The upcoming tournament is the 40th edition of the Badminton Asia Championships, which is hosted by the United Arab Emirates Badminton Federation. Indian athletes are facing a difficult path to the finals due to a challenging draw. The national squad features seven singles competitors and eight doubles teams. Key hopes for India include seeded players PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, and the doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. While Sindhu and Prannoy hold the 8th seed in singles, the Swiss Open champions Satwik and Chirag are positioned as the 6th seeds in the men's doubles category.
PV Sindhu, who secured a bronze medal in Manila and holds two Olympic medals, faces a much tougher road this time. While the former world champion has struggled to find her rhythm this season, she showed flashes of her old self during a strong run to the final of the 2023 Madrid Spain Masters. Unfortunately, that final ended in a convincing defeat, with Indonesia's Gregoria Tunjung winning 21-8, 21-8.
The 27-year-old's tournament begins with a tricky encounter against World No. 17 Wen Chi Hsu. If she advances, the competition intensifies with a potential second-round match against China's Han Yue, and a high-stakes quarterfinal clash could pit her against her longtime rival and second seed, An Se Young.
Saina Nehwal's journey starts against a qualifier, though she may likely face He Bing Jiao in the next round. Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod has the most daunting start possible, opening against the top-seeded Akane Yamaguchi. Aakarshi Kashyap also faces a steep climb, starting her campaign against former world champion Ratchanok Intanon.
In the men's singles category, Lakshya Sen faces an immediate hurdle against former world champion Loh Kean Yew. Srikanth Kidambi has a more favorable opening match against Adnan Ebrahim from Bahrain, but he could run into the 4th seed, Kodai Naraoka, in the second round. HS Prannoy will begin his campaign against Myanmar's Phone Pyae Naing, though he is placed in the same quarter as the defending champion, Lee Zii Jia.
