The incoming president of CGC is optimistic about the possibility of hosting an Asian Tour tournament

With a vision to put Chandigarh on the international golf map, the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) is actively pursuing an Asian Tour event. President Ravibir Singh Grewal mentioned that after successfully hosting a domestic tournament with an unprecedented ₹1.5-crore purse, the club has reached the top of the national circuit. The next logical step is to attract an Asian Tour event, which Grewal believes would provide a massive catalyst for the growth of golf in the local area.
The club’s new president Ravibir Singh Grewal said they have reached the peak of domestic professional golf by hosting a tournament with a prize money of ₹1.5-crore which is the highest so far. He added their next target is to host an Asian tour event at Chandigarh. He hopes if they accomplish this it would be a big boost for golf in the region.

Grewal's one-year appointment was formally ratified by the CGC general house during Sunday's meeting.

This marks Grewal's second stint leading the region's primary golf hub. His history with the club includes a period as acting president in 2016-17 after the death of former president IPS Mann. Beyond his leadership, Grewal is a passionate golfer, an educated graduate of the Doon School, and carries a distinguished family legacy as the grandson of former Punjab chief minister Justice Gurnam Singh.

As professional golf returned following lockdown restrictions, CGC played host to two significant tournaments in the first week of November: the TATA Steel PGTI Players Championships with a ₹40-lakh prize and the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational, which featured a ₹1.5-crore purse.

In fact, CGC stood out as the only club in India to organize two professional tournaments with cash prizes during the 2020 season.

During his previous term as president from 2017 to 2018, Grewal was praised for reviving professional golf at CGC after a four-year hiatus. A highlight of that period was the 2017 Open Golf Championship, which boasted a prize fund of ₹1-crore.

In a recent interview, Grewal emphasized that hosting prestigious professional tournaments remains a top priority for the club. However, his vision extends beyond the pros; he also highlighted the importance of nurturing junior golfers and improving the welfare and support for caddies.
