The future of the Canadian Grand Prix for the 2026 F1 season remains unclear

Budgetary hurdles have put the Canadian Grand Prix at risk, meaning Formula 1 might have to scrap its first race of the 2021 calendar.
Formula 1 is on course of losing its first race of the 2021 season after being reported that the Canadian Grand Prix might not take place because of financial constraints.

Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is the traditional home of the Canadian GP, but this year's race was set to be a closed-door event due to COVID-19 safety concerns. Because the lack of fans impacts revenue, F1 is seeking $6 million in compensation from the city. Mayor Valerie Plante has voiced the city's strong desire to keep the event, noting that Formula 1 remains a priority for Montreal and its partners.

If the Montreal government cannot provide the requested $6 million, there is a significant risk that the Canadian GP will be cancelled for the second year running. Mayor Plante is still working to reach a compromise with the necessary officials. In an interview with La Presse, she expressed her hope that the event stays on its original date, adding that while many details are still being ironed out, she hopes government partners will cooperate to ensure the race happens this summer.

Beyond the money, other hurdles could derail the race. Canada's current 14-day mandatory quarantine for arrivals poses a massive logistical headache for the FIA and teams, especially since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix immediately precedes the Canadian leg. Discussing these complications, Mayor Plante mentioned that she is in talks with higher government levels to establish safety protocols that satisfy Public Health requirements.

Last season, the Turkish GP became a fan favorite after being added to a pandemic-altered schedule. It was a milestone race for Lance Stroll, who secured his first-ever pole position. However, the main story was Lewis Hamilton, who claimed his seventh world title to tie the all-time record, with Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez also finishing on the podium.
