The sporting world bids farewell to former Indian cricket captain Ajit Wadekar.

Former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar has passed away in Mumbai at the age of 77 after a lengthy illness. Sachin Tendulkar highlighted the deep impact Wadekar had on his career, recalling the legend's triumph over the West Indies back in 1971.New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar has said that the former captain of India Ajit Wadekar had a profound influence on him. Wadekar, who won India’s victory in 1971 and West Indies, died in Mumbai at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness.

Taking to Twitter to express his sorrow, Sachin Tendulkar remembered Ajit Wadekar as a mentor who pushed the players of the 90s to excel. He thanked him for his constant guidance and sent his condolences to the family, while also noting how Wadekar's managerial expertise helped him transition into a successful opener.

Between 1993 and 1996, Mohammad Azharuddin experienced a career resurgence under Wadekar's leadership, recovering from a difficult period and several series losses in Australia, England, and New Zealand. Azhar paid tribute to him on Twitter, describing Wadekar as a father figure and a true icon of the game.

Anil Kumble, who had been sidelined after the 1990 tour of England, made his return to the side during the 1992-93 tour of South Africa under Wadekar's management. From that point on, Kumble remained a staple of the team until 2008. Reflecting on his loss, Kumble described Wadekar as a brilliant strategist and a fatherly figure who was far more than just a coach.

Sanjay Manjrekar remarked on Wadekar's immense legacy, noting that he was revered by his peers and possessed a commanding personality. While he acknowledged that Wadekar could be a demanding coach, he emphasized the profound mark he left on Indian cricket.
