Critics blast BCCI selectors over the selection of Venkatesh Iyer

Following the BCCI's announcement of the squad for the South Africa series, many cricket enthusiasts expressed disappointment with the selection panel's logic. The primary source of frustration is Venkatesh Iyer's spot in the team, which seems unjustified given his poor 2022 IPL stats. This has led analysts to question why Iyer was favored over consistent performers like Sanju Samson and Rahul Tripathi.

KL Rahul will captain the Indian side in their clashes with South Africa, supported by Rishabh Pant as deputy. Additionally, the squad welcomes back Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Dinesh Karthik, all of whom dominated the 2022 IPL season.

Venkatesh Iyer's performance has been on a downward trend since he first played for India, a slump that was evident in IPL 2022 where he scored only 182 runs in 12 appearances. Meanwhile, Rahul Tripathi proved his worth this season, establishing himself as a top-tier batter with 413 runs and an impressive strike rate of 161.72.

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, also put up strong numbers with 374 runs at a strike rate of 147.24, including two half-centuries. Both Samson and Tripathi have been remarkably steady in the IPL over recent years, making it hard to understand why they were overlooked while senior players are taking a break.

With stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli resting for this T20I series, the BCCI has introduced fresh talent. Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik have both earned their first India caps, with Malik specifically catching eyes after seizing 21 wickets in 13 matches for SunRisers Hyderabad this IPL season.
