Top talents like Naseem Shah, Josh Little, and Shamar Joseph are among the key players available in the upcoming SA20 auction.

On October 1, 2024, Cape Town will be the center of attention as the SA20 Season 3 auction kicks off. Nearly 200 players are on the block, including a mix of 115 South African locals and 73 international recruits representing 14 different countries.

The league highlighted its global reach on Wednesday by releasing the official shortlist. This final group was narrowed down from an impressive pool of almost 600 players who registered for the event. Leading the charge from the Caribbean are the West Indian fast-bowling duo, Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde.

The list of available bowlers is stacked, featuring England's Saqib Mahmood, Ollie Robinson, Jake Ball, and Josh Hull. Also returning to the fray is Ireland's left-arm pacer Josh Little, who previously played for the South Africa Capitals. Furthermore, the high-velocity bowling of Naseem Shah will be available for teams to bid on.

On the batting front, teams have the chance to recruit Martin Guptill, New Zealand's legendary T20I opener, to add some aggression to their top order, or Sri Lanka's rising star, Kamindu Mendis. Local talent is equally well-represented, with top domestic names like Tony de Zorzi and the current Cricket SA T20 Player of the Year, Reeza Hendricks, leading the South African contingent.

With only 13 open slots remaining across the six franchises, the atmosphere is expected to be intense. Graeme Smith, the League Commissioner and former South African captain, is anticipating a high-stakes event, noting that several of the world's most prominent T20 players have already committed to the third season.

Each squad must maintain a strict roster of 19 players, which includes a rookie and a wildcard, with a mandatory minimum of ten South Africans and a cap of seven international players. The league will again use the rookie draft system from Season 2; if a young player isn't picked during the primary auction, they will enter a separate rookie draft held immediately afterward.

Most teams have already named their Wildcard picks, with the exception of the Joburg Super Kings. In terms of finances, the Super Kings have R3.925m left, the champion Sunrisers Eastern Cape have R2.845m, and Durban’s Super Giant holds R2.35m. Joburg still has until December 30 to finalize their Wildcard choice. The Paarl Royals enter the auction with the most buying power at R11.950m, followed by MI Cape Town with R8.275m and the Pretoria Capitals with R4.575m.
