According to Ian Healy, David Warner's recent form in Perth indicates he could easily extend his Test career by another year

David Warner has expressed his desire to retire from the longest format of the game after the series against Pakistan concludes. However, Ian Healy, the former Australian wicketkeeper, believes the opener is still sharp enough to compete for another year. This opinion comes after Warner's brilliant 164-run knock in the first innings, which played a pivotal role in Australia's dominant 360-run win over Pakistan in Perth. Despite this success, Warner remains committed to his plan of retiring during the Sydney Test, which kicks off on Wednesday, January 3rd.
Though David Warner has stated his intention to retire from Test cricket at the end of the current series against Pakistan, former Australia wicketkeeper Ian Healy believes the opener can play the five-day game for another year. With 164 from 211 balls in the first innings, Warner excelled in Australia’s 360-run thrashing of Pakistan in Perth. The southpaw, on the other hand, has already stated his wish to end his Test career later in the series, in the New Year’s match against Pakistan in Sydney, which begins on January 3, Wednesday.

Healy believes the 37-year-old is still far too valuable to the Australian side to retire just yet. He specifically praised Warner's endurance and fitness, noting that his quick movement and footwork remain top-tier. In an interview with SEN Radio, Healy mentioned that he agrees with Mitchell Johnson's take: there's no need to force a graceful exit if you're currently playing your best cricket, especially since the previous few years hadn't been as strong.

Healy added that if Warner continues to bat with this level of aggression and skill, he should keep playing until he truly loses the desire. He noted that the balance, agility, and raw bat speed displayed in Perth were exactly what had been missing from Warner's Test game for some time.

Warner's decision to announce his retirement after the Sydney Test didn't sit well with his former teammate Mitchell Johnson. Given Warner's recent struggles in the format, Johnson criticized the move, suggesting that the current series against Pakistan should have been used as a trial period to find and integrate a successor instead.

That said, Healy acknowledged that Warner's century under challenging conditions was the deciding factor in the Perth victory. He noted that scoring 160 runs so rapidly in a tough environment is a rare feat, even if Pakistan's early bowling strategy was flawed. Comparing him to legends like Michael Slater and Mark Waugh, who were also masters of difficult batting conditions, Healy described Warner's performance as simply outstanding.

With 8,651 runs across 110 Test matches, Warner's career in the five-day game may be ending, but he will still be active in limited-overs cricket and continue to feature in T20 leagues, including the IPL.
