India began their campaign in the second Test against Bangladesh at Shere Bangla Stadium on a positive note. The first day of this series-deciding match ended prematurely due to bad light, with India sitting comfortably at 19/0. KL Rahul, the team captain, and Shubman Gill finished the day unbeaten on 14 and 3 respectively after facing eight overs in the final stint. This came after India's bowlers successfully restricted the hosts to 227 runs in their first innings.
Bangladesh opened their innings with Najmul Shanto and Zakir Hasan attempting to build a steady start. However, Jaydev Unadkat, returning to the Test arena after twelve years, provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Hasan for 15. The momentum shifted further when Ravichandran Ashwin claimed Shanto (24) LBW in the following over. In response, Mominul Haque and skipper Shakib Al Hasan tried to stabilize the innings, putting together a 43-run stand for the third wicket.
The recovery was short-lived as Umesh Yadav dismissed Shakib (16), leaving the hosts reeling at 82/3. While Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das added 26 and 25 runs respectively, the Indian bowling attack maintained a tight grip, taking regular wickets to stifle the scoring. Mominul Haque was the lone warrior for Bangladesh, scoring a vital 84—a performance that brought huge relief after ten consecutive innings of failing to reach double figures.
Umesh displayed great skill toward the end of the innings to rattle the hosts. Utilizing the grass-heavy pitch, the veteran pacer mastered reverse swing to devastating effect. He finished with one of his career-best performances, taking four wickets while giving up only 25 runs across 15 overs. Complementing him, Ashwin also claimed four wickets, while Unadkat chipped in with two.
