On Monday, West Ham United sailed into the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a smooth 2-0 win over Derby County, who play in the third division. This result sets the stage for a big match against Manchester United in the next round. The team is in great form, having secured two wins on the bounce—the first being a 2-0 result against Everton nine days prior that lifted them out of the bottom three in the Premier League. In this outing, the East London club showed their quality by snapping Derby's 14-game run without defeat.
West Ham United eased into the FA Cup fifth round with a comfortable 2-0 victory over third-tier Derby County on Monday. With a comprehensive win, West Ham United has booked a fifth-round tie with Manchester United. West Ham United has been producing brilliant performances to register back-to-back wins after beating Everton 2-0 to climb out of the Premier League’s bottom three nine days ago. The East London club hit the top gear as they halted League One side Derby’s 14-game unbeaten run.
Derby County looked dangerous from the start, nearly finding the net within the first sixty seconds. However, Czech international Tomas Soucek intervened with a key block at the edge of the box to keep things scoreless. West Ham responded by focusing on quick breaks, with Michail Antonio leading a promising charge; however, he opted for a shot of his own rather than passing to his open teammates, sending the ball wide of the post.
The Hammers kept the pressure on as they searched for a breakthrough. Jarrod Bowen first had a chance that was comfortably saved by Joe Wildsmith, but the 26-year-old winger corrected his mistake just three minutes later. In the 10th minute, Bowen scored a sharp goal following a slick one-two between Soucek and Antonio, with Soucek nodding the ball into Bowen's path for a clinical finish into the corner.
After a 12-game goal drought, Bowen is back in form, scoring twice against Everton and adding another here to bring his tally to three in two matches. West Ham entered the break leading 1-0, and shortly after the restart, Bowen provided the cross for Michail Antonio to head home the second. This goal was particularly significant for the 32-year-old Jamaican, who hadn't scored since November.
Derby's mistakes proved costly. Pablo Fornals sent Bowen down the right wing, and when the England forward crossed the ball, it took a clumsy deflection off Forsyth, landing perfectly for Antonio at the far post. The striker capitalized instantly, slotting it into an open net while Forsyth's attempt to cover the near post only served to redirect the ball toward the opponent.
West Ham controlled the remainder of the match, protecting their lead and limiting Derby's opportunities. This marks the first time since October that the club has won two games in a row. Following the match, Bowen noted that the victory provides the squad with a significant boost in confidence moving forward.
