Iga Swiatek defended her Stuttgart Open title with a convincing straight-sets win over Aryna Sabalenka.

The world's top-ranked player, Iga Swiatek, claimed her second straight Stuttgart Open title by beating Belarus's Aryna Sabalenka in two sets. Swiatek started her 2023 clay season strongly, winning 6-3, 6-4 in a repeat of the previous year's final. The battle between the top two players lasted nearly two hours, resulting in Swiatek's 13th career singles title on indoor clay and her 20th overall victory this year.
World No.1 Iga Swiatek defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to win her second successive Stuttgart Open title. Swiatek rallied past the Australian Open champion 6-3, 6-4 to successfully defend her title, beginning her 2023 clay court season with a bang. Sunday’s summit clash was a repeat of last year’s final and both the top two players in the rankings battled for 1 hour and 50 minutes before the Pole star claimed her 13th career singles title on the indoor clay. Swiatek registered her 20th match-win of the year.

Swiatek has achieved a feat not seen in Stuttgart since Angelique Kerber's run in 2015 and 2016 by winning consecutive titles. Conversely, Sabalenka has now fallen in the Stuttgart final for three years running. This victory marks the third time Swiatek has successfully defended a title, adding to her previous triumphs in Doha this year and Rome in 2022. With this dominant performance, she now ties with Sabalenka and Belinda Bencic for the most titles won so far this season. For the 21-year-old Pole, winning immediately after an injury layoff serves as a perfect confidence booster heading into her French Open title defense in May.

Both athletes maintained a high level of play throughout the match. Toward the end of the first set, the U.S. Open champion managed a break of serve, capitalizing on a rare mistake from Swiatek. However, the Polish player stayed composed, worked her way to a breakpoint, and moved ahead 5-3 before comfortably closing out the set on her second match point.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with the top seed Swiatek breaking Sabalenka in the very first game to jump to a 2-0 lead. As the match progressed, the 24-year-old Belarusian struggled with several unforced errors, which led to visible frustration on the court. Swiatek seized the opportunity, ending the match with a clean backhand winner on her first match point.

This victory extends Swiatek's head-to-head lead over Sabalenka to 5-2. Notably, this was the first time in nearly ten years that the world number one and number two faced off on clay, a rarity last seen when Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in the 2013 French Open final.

Following the match, Swiatek expressed her gratitude toward her team during the on-court interview, noting how intense the recent period had been and praising the strategic decisions they made. She described the current moment as thrilling and expressed her love for the tournament, promising to return in the future.
