The renowned Indian duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, reached a massive milestone on Sunday by winning the Indonesia Open men's doubles title. By doing so, they became the first pair from India to ever win a BWF Super 1000 event. Their path to victory went through the world champions, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia, whom they defeated in the final. Although they weren't the favorites going into the match, the Indian pair played brilliantly to overcome the odds.
The star Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scripted history by winning the men’s doubles title at the Indonesia Open on Sunday. Satwik and Chirag became the first doubles pair from India to claim the title in a BWF Super 1000 event. The Indian pair defeated reigning world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the summit clash of Indonesia Open 2023 on Sunday. Satwik and Chirag entered the grand finale as underdogs but did well to challenge all odds to clinch the title.
With a commanding 21-17, 21-18 straight-set win, Satwik and Chirag delivered a masterclass performance in the final to defeat the Malaysian side. This victory further elevates the status of the World No. 6 pair, who previously earned a bronze at the world championships and gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games last year.
The duo took control of the match midway through the first set and never looked back, denying their highly-rated opponents any real chance to recover. This dominance continued into the second game, where a sharp four-point streak ensured they stayed ahead. The match seemed almost decided in their favor, although the Malaysians showed resilience by saving four match points to bring the game closer.
Despite the tension, the World No. 6 pair—already decorated with a Commonwealth Games gold and a world bronze—remained composed. When the score reached 20-18, they finally closed the deal, converting the match point to secure a stunning victory. This win is particularly sweet as it marks their first victory over Chia and Yik in 11 encounters.
Historically, the Indians had struggled against the world champions, failing to win in eight of their previous meetings. Even when they came close on four separate occasions, Chia and Yik's superior defense usually proved the difference. However, this time was different, as Satwik and Chirag stunned their rivals in just 43 minutes at the legendary Istora Senayan arena.
Reflecting on the win, Satwiksairaj mentioned that their thorough preparation and the incredible support from the local crowd throughout the week played a huge role. He noted that they played their best badminton of the tournament and focused on taking the match one point at a time to overcome their poor head-to-head record against the Malaysians.
