Italian Open 2026: Iga Swiatek secures quarterfinal spot with win over Victoria Azarenka

After shaking off some early nerves, Iga Swiatek dominated Victoria Azarenka in a fascinating matchup featuring two different eras of world number ones. The top-seeded Swiatek took the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, extending her overall winning streak to 25 matches and maintaining a perfect eight-game run in the Italian capital.

By reaching 25 consecutive wins, Swiatek has joined a prestigious list of players—including the likes of Justine Henin and Novak Djokovic—who have achieved this feat since the turn of the millennium. The young Pole's current form is the most impressive we've seen on the women's circuit since Serena Williams' historic 2015 run. Since February's Dubai Open, she has been unstoppable, collecting trophies in Stuttgart, Miami, Indian Wells, and Doha.

To ensure she was fully recovered, Swiatek took a break during last week's Madrid Open. Her return to form in Rome was immediate, as she breezed through her second-round encounter with Elena-Gabriela Ruse with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 scoreline.

The opening set was a grueling 79-minute marathon characterized by seven breaks of serve. Swiatek struggled early on, falling behind 3-0 after losing her own serve twice, but she eventually found her rhythm and fought back to lead 5-3.

A double fault from Azarenka handed the eighth game to Swiatek. Although the Belarusian managed to fight back in a long game, saving four set points to break back and prolong the set, Swiatek ultimately broke serve once more to take the lead and then dominated the second set.

Even though Swiatek dropped her serve in the first game of the second set, she recovered quickly to seize control of the match. She then swept six consecutive games to book her place in her fifth straight quarterfinal, though the victory required significant grit and effort.

In the quarterfinals, Swiatek will face Bianca Andreescu, the former US Open winner who reached the stage by beating Petra Martic 6-4, 6-4. For the Canadian, this marks her first quarterfinal appearance since returning from a six-month hiatus dedicated to her mental wellbeing.

Looking ahead, the 2020 French Open winner will start her quest for a second career Grand Slam title when Roland Garros kicks off on May 22nd.
