In a thrilling encounter at Panchkula's Tau Devi Lal Stadium on Monday, Snehit overcame the defending champion Harmeet Desai to enter the National Table Tennis Championship semi-finals. Snehit has a history of success at this particular stadium, having previously defeated Sharath Kamal here during the 2018 North Zone ranking event on his way to the final.
Joining Snehit in the semi-finals are other heavyweights of the sport, including Manav Thakkar, Sharath Kamal, and G. Sathiyan. Interestingly, every single one of these players won their quarter-final matches with a 4-1 scoreline. The most anticipated game is the clash between Sharath and Sathiyan, who are not only top competitors but also the mentors who guided Snehit.
Sharath's victory came against Amalraj, a former national champion. After Sharath built a comfortable 3-1 lead, Amalraj began to crumble under the pressure, making several costly mistakes that allowed Sharath to comfortably claim victory over a formidable opponent.
Sathiyan continued his dominant form by convincingly beating another former national champion, Sanil Shetty. While Shetty fought hard to stay in the game, Sathiyan's superior play eventually secured the win. In another high-energy match, Manav Thakkar beat Ronit Bhanja in a contest defined by exhausting, long rallies. This sets the stage for the semi-finals, where Sharath will take on Thakkar and Sathiyan will battle Snehit.
Out of all the competitors, Snehit was undoubtedly the standout performer. The 20-year-old showed incredible skill in the third round against Sourav Saha, a win that was particularly meaningful as it broke his streak of exiting the championship before the pre-quarterfinals. He then faced Harmeet in the quarter-finals, where he used a clever strategy to turn Harmeet's powerful backhand against him. This tactic forced the champion into uncharacteristic errors and shattered his confidence, resulting in the biggest shock of the tournament.
Snehit's next challenge was against Sushmit, a player who utilizes a rare combination of two different defensive rubbers on his racket. The Hyderabad-native admitted that he had never encountered such a setup before, which made it difficult for him to read the ball and anticipate the returns initially.
Because of this unfamiliarity, Snehit struggled to take control of the match, only managing to tie the second game at 10-10. He caught a lucky break when the ball clipped Sriram's finger near the table, giving him the game-point to level the score at 1-1. This moment shifted the entire momentum of the match, allowing Snehit to play with confidence and fluidity for the rest of the game.
