Sri Lanka managed to stop a string of eight straight ODI defeats just before the 2019 World Cup, securing a 35-run win against Scotland.

In a rain-interrupted match in Edinburgh this past Tuesday, Sri Lanka finally broke their eight-game ODI losing streak by beating Scotland by 35 runs. Although Scotland failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, they had proven their capability for major upsets by defeating the tournament favorites and hosts, England, the previous year. The series got off to a rough start when Saturday's opening game was rained out entirely, but the weather cleared up for the second encounter. Leading the charge was Sri Lanka's new captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 77 in a team total of 322 for eight. This marked his second fifty at this level and his first since facing Scotland on this very ground in 2011.

The innings featured three different half-centuries, one of which was Avishka Fernando's first-ever fifty in an ODI match.

Despite their success, both opening batsmen were eventually dismissed by Brad Wheal; Karunaratne went out at first slip for 13, and Avishka was caught at mid-off for 22.
