Indore will host the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting Wednesday, March 1. KL Rahul is currently under pressure; despite the team's support, a meager return of 38 runs in three innings has put his place in the XI in jeopardy, especially with the talented Shubman Gill waiting for an opportunity. However, the selection committee has so far prioritized veteran experience at the top of the order over Gill's current form.
The third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia will be played from March 1 (Wednesday) in Indore. Despite the team management’s trust in KL Rahul, the Indian opener has only scored 38 runs in the last three innings, making it difficult for him to continue getting chances in the playing XI, especially with someone like Shubman Gill waiting in the wings. Although Gill has showcased impressive form, selectors have opted for more experienced player at the top of India’s batting order.
Addressing the slump of certain players, Rohit Sharma mentioned in a pre-match briefing that talented individuals are always given enough time to find their rhythm. He dismissed the significance of the vice-captaincy, stating that the role doesn't define a player's standing. He suggested Rahul's appointment was primarily based on seniority and emphasized that taking the title away means nothing in terms of his value to the team.
Rohit acknowledged that both Rahul and Gill are putting in immense effort during their training sessions. However, he refused to reveal the final starting eleven ahead of time, stating that he'd rather wait until the toss to avoid complications from last-minute injuries and to keep the anticipation high for the fans.
The captain highlighted that every one of the 17 squad members has a fair shot, and the management will support those who show talent. With India currently leading the four-match series 2-0, a victory in this third Test would guarantee Rohit's team a spot in the World Test Championship final.
