Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma left out of India's Sri Lanka tour

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently shared that India will head to Sri Lanka in July for three ODIs and five T20Is, though some of the country's top players will be absent.

Ganguly noted that heavyweights like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will miss the tour because they are committed to a five-match Test series in England.

The ICC had scheduled three T20Is in Sri Lanka for July, a tour that had to be scrapped the previous year due to COVID-19.

Ganguly mentioned that a white-ball series involving T20s and ODIs has been arranged for July. He also clarified that the squad will be composed of white-ball experts, effectively creating a distinct team rather than just a split squad.

The BCCI wants players such as Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Deepak Chahar to be in peak form before the England tour concludes on September 14.

Due to stringent quarantine mandates in the UK, Kohli and Sharma aren't expected to travel back. Ganguly pointed out that since July usually lacks official senior matches—with the Test squad typically playing internal games—it makes sense to let other veteran players get some match experience.
