Following a one-year hiatus due to ball-tampering sanctions, Steve Smith and David Warner have officially been recalled to the Australian World Cup team.
The two players, who once led the team as captain and vice-captain, were penalized with fines and bans for their involvement in the 2018 South Africa Test match controversy.
Trevor Hohns, head of the selection committee, commented on the reintegration of Smith and Warner into the national setup.
Prior to their return, both athletes competed in the current IPL season, playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
Hohns mentioned that the team's development over the last six months has been very encouraging, highlighted by their wins against India and Pakistan in the UAE.
The selection committee welcomed Smith and Warner back, emphasizing that their elite skill sets and strong IPL form made them indispensable.
The squad's bowling depth is bolstered by the inclusion of Zampa and Lyon, along with fast bowlers like Starc, Cummins, Behrendorff, Richardson, and Coulter-Nile.
Notably absent from the list are Josh Hazlewood and Peter Handscomb, the latter of whom had recently impressed with his first ODI hundred in India.
The complete Australian World Cup roster consists of: Aaron Finch (c), Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, and Adam Zampa. Their first match is scheduled for June 1 against Afghanistan in Bristol.
